The University of Lodz was involved in almost all phases of building the PLLuM model. We specialised in developing the conversational competences of the base model. This is an extremely difficult task that required developing unique data sets and performing hundreds of experiments in the field of tuning models
– says Prof. Piotr Pęzik from the Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz, who manages the work of the UniLodz team in the PLLuM project.
What exactly is PLLuM?
The Polish Large Language Model (PLLuM) is a family of artificial intelligence models that allows processing and generating texts in Polish. It stands out from other language models in that it is adapted to the specifics of the Polish language and public administration terminology.
The process of its creation uses comprehensive procedures for collecting data and assessing their quality. The Polish language model is based on ethical data acquisition and primarily uses organic data – developed manually, and not using other language models. "Trained on Polish resources, it copes very well with the challenges of flexion and complex syntax, generating precise content.
Large language models are one of the most spectacular versions of the development of generative artificial intelligence. Thanks to projects such as PLLuM, we not only carry out tasks assigned to us by the government, but we are also learning the scientific and practical foundations of building this technology at a dizzying pace. Due to the fact that we are carrying out these tasks in a consortium of universities and research institutes, we will soon be passing on this knowledge to thousands of students. More challenges lie ahead. Our university will be carrying out the next stages of implementing artificial intelligence as part of the consortium
– adds Prof. Piotr Pęzik.
PLLuM is an investment in a digital state
The development of PLLuM is an opportunity to strengthen Poland's competitiveness in the IT sector and the entire economy. Investments in artificial intelligence contribute to the creation of new companies and products based on AI, driving economic growth. The use of PLLuM in various areas – from education and administration to the private sector – supports the creation of modern solutions that strengthen Poland's position among the leaders in AI development.
Future of PLLuM
The Ministry of Digital Affairs has allocated PLN 19 million for further development of the project. The Polish language model is to be used as a virtual assistant for the mObywatel application supporting citizens in obtaining public information. It will also be used as an intelligent official assistant that will automate document processing, content analysis, information searches and support in answering citizens' questions. It will also be helpful in education – it will facilitate the development of educational applications, translations and help teachers conduct engaging lessons using the latest technologies.
The project is implemented on behalf of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, which is the owner of the results and controls the development of PLLuM. In addition to the University of Lodz, the project consortium includes: Wrocław University of Science and Technology (project leader), Institute of Computer Science PAS, Institute of Slavic Studies PAS, Research and Academic Computer Network (NASK-PIB) and the OPI PIB.
