Naukowiec z WBIOŚ UŁ ekspertem w misji „Wzmocnienie zdolności reagowania na zdarzenia CBRN w Sierra Leone”

Experts from the P106 project participated in a mission in Sierra Leone, which aimed to strengthen the country's response capabilities to chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear (CBRN) threats on 10-14 February of the current year. The team included dr hab. Michał Bijak, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz from the Biohazard Prevention Centre of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz.

The P106 project "Table top, field Exercises, Simulations, and Training (TEST) for CBRN risk mitigation" is implemented under the EU Foreign Policy Instrument by a consortium consisting of: GOPA PACE (Belgium), International Security and Emergency Institute (Slovakia), Belgian National Crisis Center, Gopa Worldwide (Germany) and University of Lodz.

A multidisciplinary team of experts worked closely with government agencies responsible for responding to CBRN incidents in Sierra Leone, as well as representatives from the military, police and fire services, to assess gaps, train personnel and improve coordination of activities.

The most important activities:

10 February 2025 – needs and gaps analysis

  • Identifying key challenges in responding to CBRN incidents

11 February 2025 – TTX preparatory workshops (discussion based on specific situations)

  • Presenting the list of potential CBRN incidents and threat scenarios
  • Developing three key scenarios tailored to Sierra Leone and preparing them for TTX

12 February 2025 – Equipment training

  • Conducting practical training in personal protective equipment, equipment for detection and decontamination purchased under the EU CBRN programme
  • Visiting the Main Headquarters of the State Fire Service and meeting with the Deputy Chief Commander of the State Fire Service in Sierra Leone
  • Conducting a visit to the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Agency

13 February 2025 –Tabletop Exercise (TTX)

  • CBRN Incident Response Simulations in Three Scenarios: Improving Roles, Standard Operating Procedures and Equipment Needs

14 February 2025 – Field exercises and strategic discussions

  • Conducting practical exercises on personal protective equipment, detection of hazardous chemicals and decontamination process
  • Organising a strategic meeting with the EU Regional Security Advisor, Charles Suilen
